2009: 55. Boy Meets Boy

“9 P.M. on a November Saturday.  Joni, Tony and I are out on the town.”

Boy Meets Boy, David Levithan

This is a charming young adult book - a fantasy, alas, but a darling one.  It’s a love story between two teenage boys, and its wonderful because its just a love story like you’d see with a straight couple, complete with a meet cute, complicated ex and sweet resolution.  That’s not the fantasy - I think in this day in age we can believe that a gay couple - even a teenage couple - can have a regular relationship and there should be more sweet young romance novels about them (and maybe there are and I don’t know about them), especially ones in which the gay aspect is absolutely secondary to the love story.  What makes this a fantasy, I think, is that it takes place in a town where every single person is gay friendly - the homecoming queen is a drag queen and the captain of the football team, the local stores all have gay themes, etc.  The book is sweet and charming and I wish we lived in this world where everyone was so accepting of each other, but alas I do not think that such a place exists - at least not to the extent portrayed in this book.  It may not be the world’s deepest novel, but its a totally lovely young adult romance and it cute as a button.
