Pedal Zombies: Thirteen Feminist Bicycle Science Fiction Stories, Edited by Elly Blue
Let me just start by saying that if you aren’t excited about a book called Pedal Zombies: Thirteen Feminist Bicycle Science Fiction Stories, I’m not sure we can even be friends anymore. What a title. And, as it suggests, this book consists of 13 short stories about zombies and bicycles. If you had asked me, before reading it, did I think the world could contain 13 sufficiently interesting stories about bicycles and zombies that I could read it all in one sitting and not get bored, I might have answered no. I would have been mistaken. There is evidently a lot of zombie/bicycle material out there.
The stories range from funny to horrifying, satirical to poignant. I had sort of thought I was done with zombies as a cultural event (I’m no Walking Dead fan), but I found this little collection to be a delight. And it’s a lovely little book to hold, too - small, well designed, from a small press called Microcosm Publishing, out of Oregon (full disclosure, my friend has an upcoming book published by the press, and they sent me this book to review). It’s not the kind of stuff I usually read - or at least, the sort of stuff I’ve been reading lately (not a Brit or a tea cosy in sight!), but it was great fun, and I highly recommend it!
